Plasmon Mutations in Cytoplasmic Male-Sterile Pearl Millet, PENNISETUM TYPHOIDES.

چکیده

Spontaneous mutations from sterile to fertile were demonstrated in four different cytoplasmic male-sterile stocks of pearl millet. One stock, ASM-3, was of African origin, and the other three, LMS-1A, ASM-5, and ASM-7, all had the same cyptoplasm of Indian origin, but differed in nuclear make-up. These reversions were shown to be plasmon mutations, rather than genic in nature. ASM-3 mutated at the lowest rate, about 0.03/100 heads. LSM-1A, ASM-5, and ASM-7 all had the same cytoplasm but mutated at the respective rates of 0.15, 0.26, and 1.02/100 heads, indicating that plasmon mutation rate is strongly influenced by the nuclear environment.

Phosphate supply as a promoter of tolerance to arsenic in pearl millet

Many soils are contaminated by heavy metals, with arsenic posing serious environmental threat. Enrichment of soil with phosphate is believed to reduce the arsenic toxicity. However, only a few attempts have already been conducted towards understanding the precise role of phosphate in controlling As toxicity. Moreover, there is no adequate information on the effect of phosphate on As-induced...

Identification and Screening of Restorers and Maintainers for different CMS Lines of Pearl Millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R.Br.)

For the evolution of new pearl millet hybrids with diverse cytoplasmic background suitable for specific areas and condition, there is a need for diversified CMS sources among locally adaptable lines and identification of locally adaptable restorers. The present study was undertaken to screen the male sterile and restorer lines among the crosses of five male sterile lines and thirty inbreds of p...

In vitro digestibility and amino acid composition of pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides) and other cereals.

The purpose of this study was to compare in vitro digestibility, protein distribution patterns, and amino acid composition of pearl millet with other major cereals. Digestibility values for the pearl millet varieties were higher than that of sorghum and comparable to that of maize. In contrast to sorghum, digestibility of pearl millet and maize did not decrease significantly upon cooking. Prote...

Evaluation of Pearl Millet Male-sterile Lines and their Maintainers for Resistance to Downy Mildew and Smut

Downy mildew caused by Sclerospora graminicola (Sacc.) Schroët. and smut caused by Moesziomyces penicillariae (Bref.) Vanky are the most important diseases (in that order) limiting the productivity of pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.] in Asia and Africa (Thakur et al. 1992; Singh et al. 1993). These diseases are more serious on commercial F1 hybrids than on open-pollinated varieties...
